[GIGOLO32] Dopplereffekt - Gesamtkunstwerk

Alright, in for some pioneering though very inorganic music?

"Dopplereffekt are one of the more mysterious units of the contemporary electronic music scene. There are no interviews and hardly any live appearances. The composers hide behind strange German pseudonyms whereas the song titles and lyrics are in English and make up a strange mixture of scientific, sexually explicit and political allusions. "

"The main member during all periods has probably been producer/ artist Gerald Donald alias "Rudolf Klorzeiger". Donald is generally believed to be also the author of the acts Heinrich Müller/ Der Zyklus, Japanese Telecom and Arpanet as well as one half of the band Drexciya until 1997. During that period the sound of these two acts showed strong similarities, and alongside other Detroit based acts on the labels Underground Resistance and direct beat they were highly influental in the 90s' revival of electro. The 1999 compilation of all Dopplereffekt releases from this period, Gesamtkunstwerk, depicted Donald with a new member, "To Nhan Le Thi", who most likely had not been involved with the old material but was given credit anyway and who has been a steady and visible member since, giving occasional live performances.

This second period of the band, very contrary to the mid-1990s releases, has been characterised by what sounds like mostly digital sound synthesis and processing, the implication of a connection of the band's music composition to contemporary physics research via track titles and sleeve artworks, and often times the absence of danceable drum rhythms and / or tonality, hence resembling Contemporary classical music styles, especially musique concrete and early pioneers of electronic music with analogue modular music systems / synthesizers. However, the compositions are still mostly based on short sequenced riffs/ loops, and the instrumentation is often still based on the traditional scheme "drums + bass + main riff + background synth pads". These traits (free form in some aspects, pop music tradition in others) are contradictory from a mainstream point of view, but are acceptable in the context of the ambient genre or film music.

There are no known interviews of Donald or other members concerning Dopplereffekt at this time, except for a feature in the October 2009 issue of new music magazine The Wire, containing exchanges with two people purporting to be associated with the group."

[WARP] Chris Clark / Clark EP/CD Collection

"I just received every Chris Clark album, and I have to say that this man is destined for something great. Clarence Park contains many beautiful piano arrangements, and also some raw, powerful, pulsating hardcore beats. Ceramics is the Bomb is jaw-droppingly wonderful, with its strange bass-pounding beats. Finally his newest album, Empty the Bones of You is definetely a little gentler than his previous albums, but equally amazing and beautiful as its predecessors. Buy his shit."

"Everything he makes is unique yet original, He is very undergoing in his sound where he composes very dark music with ambient melodies and mysterius IDM tones. So far i've yet to discoverd any other producer wich has such a unique sound as Chris Clark does, this guy is awsome and everyone who's into IDM/experimental/Abstract music should love this guy! Whenever you want to escape this reality, listen to Chris Clark cause he will sure take you away!"

"Chris Clark is an incredibly gifted young talent who is undoubtedly destined to join the list of IDM's better known luminaries such as Autechre,Aphex Twin,Bogdan Raczynski,Venetian Snares and ISAN.Two albums (Clarence Park and Empty The Bones Of You),One ep (Ceramics Is Da Bomb),and No Filler anywhere!Sell Your clothes,Your car, your house - Your Soul!Whatever it takes, but get the dough and buy these records!"

"Chris Clark is undoubtedly one of the most enterprising artists to hit the scene in the past few years. I love his juxtaposition of heavy apocalyptic beats with gentler, smoother sounds. I saw him live - he's simply wonderful. I have also heard he still uses a PC instead of a mac."

[M63CD] Heartthrob - Dear Painter, Paint Me

After a string of pounding releases, such as the brilliant Baby Kate and a number of remixes like Horse Nation and 25 Bitches, Jesse Siminski a.k.a. Heartthrob throws in his first full-length debut. And as a bonus for us, he also included a full continuous DJ mix of all the tracks that are on the album! Thank you thank you!

"[...]Bear with me, because the music on Painter is worth it. By now, one should know what to expect from Minus, an imprint founded by legendary minimal techno master Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman and F.U.S.E.): minimalism that fits on the world’s hipper dance floors, with lots of attention to sound minutiae and the use of space. In the latter, Painter moves well, ebbing and flowing between thin, reverberated sound gutted of any low-end, to colossal ponky kicks. Also a Minus trademark, the bass sounds are often stuck in a limited and frequent repetition, sometimes relegated to a garnish for the bass drum, while the whooshing synths set out funky, syncopated arpeggios.[...]"

[...] Click Box EP Collection

"In October 2004, Brazilian music producers Pedro Turra and Marco AS decided to pursue new electronic sounds, moving away from conventional techno and aiming to bring a more interesting musical form to the dance floor. This is when Click Box was formed; an electronic music project derived from techno and house music, based on minimal constructions. Click Box produces music which is constant and with a limited number of simultaneous elements, conveing at times feelings of extreme tension or relaxation, experimenting timbres and rythms, resulting in a vanguard, futuristic and conceptual work, while always keeping an eye on the dance floor."

[PLUS8024] FUSE - Dimension Intrusion

In between Circuit Breaker and the almost holy moniker Plastikman, Richard Michael Hawtin had another moniker which is not that popular but at the same time extremely underrated. This moniker is nothing less than F.U.S.E. (or: Further Underground Sound Experiments). With this record, originally released on Richie's first imprint together with John Acquaviva Plus 8 and later on Warp Records, Richie has set another milestone in the development of his own sound and techno in general. Nice detail to know is that the amazing artwork for the cover of this album is made by Richie's brother Matthew. Have fun!

"This is most probably Richie Hawtin's career defining moment, though not as nearly as venerated as his Plastikman output. First of all, it's all that versatile, and still captures the essence of a real album, meaninig it encompasses an impressive amount of territory (electronic music wise), failing to stick to any one of them, but never sounds like a random 'FUSE: the collection' amount of tracks. You get everything from deep, warm melodies, menacing hard techno, ambient, minimal and repetitive musical patterns, dry and wicked acid, subtle and hard percussion, something for the mind and the feet. I'm keen of the way in which "Dimension intrusion" isn't afraid to explore many paths, something I missed in his Plastikman projects, which very often stuck to a single mood and pulled it through an entire album. I guess it sounds like a combination of his straight forward, thumping, minimal acid stuff (think Krakpot), Speedy J's mid nineties playful and melody inclined breed of techno, with a touch of that heavy, bass driven stuff. Favorite tracks are Theyck, a long and hypnotizing tune, with a smooth flow and a really trippy, laid back feel to it. Makes me drift away with my thoughts like few other tunes can, then Substance Abuse as a close second, with a deviant 'overdose' sample, coupled with female chants during the break down. Awesome, and hella nasty! From Richie's mind into ours."

[AMB3922CD] Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92

"Quite possibly one of the greatest electronic music albums ever to be released. Even though the technology that Richard use back then is far outdated, I don't beleive anything we have today can completly replicate the dreamy synth and basslines, along with the many uses of the hi-hat. Very chilled out, melodic and puts you in another world."

"I absolutely can NOT go on and not write a review for each of the tracks... but it should be noted that this album works very well as a whole also, listen to everything!

Xtal - Perfect. This is what got me into Aphex and electronica in general, heard it on the radio one day, it got a hold on me and never let go, wonderful! Use of vocal samples is quite impressive too, perfect first track for this album.

Tha - This one is now my favourite off of SAW 85-92... simply one of the mose beautiful musical compositions I have EVER heard... definitely on my desert island mix cd. Light alien percussion and a melody to DIE for propel this track along slowly through the 9 minutes, he could have made this longer and I wouldn't mind... it's a grower though, I only really started appreciating it after a few months.

Pulsewidth - One of the more dancey tracks on the album, this one keeps your attention like MAD through the entire time, the sublime bass and beat are wonderful, pure Aphex goodness! :) Awesome synth sounds too.

Ageispolis - This one will put pictures in your mind, the beat and hi-hat line are wonderful, and the layers of synth melodies are perfectly placed. I always view a long road or slow roller coaster at night, with lights moving past you at the perfect speed. Classic.

i - A nice little interlude, hinting a little more at the kind of things he would head into with SAW 2... I wish this went for longer though, the melody is one of those euphoric tunes you wish never ended.

Green Calx - Many people consider this the outcast of the album, but I LOVE this track, one of my faves off of SAW 2, it's meticulously programmed and layered. If you listen to the smoother sounding synth line, you will hear the melody that qualified this as "ambient". The sound effects are great too.

Heliosphan - Very DNB sounding breakbeat in this one, awesome melody, that reminds me of something going in reverse, this is another intricate one, very quick sounding, but a classic, this one definitely stands the test of time, sounding like it could have been produced years and years later!

We Are The Music Makers - GREAT SAMPLE, trancey Aphex track with light synths and a bouncing beat, this is a GREAT chill out track, reminds me of the first Analogue Bubblebath, another classic track in it's own right!

Schottkey 7th Path - Here we go, some dark ambient! I LOVE this one to death too, one of my faves... the synth line in this one just creeps the hell out of me, and the completely mechanical alien drum sounds just add to that effect, I always imagine a dark catwalk or alley with this one at night, it's just a really dark sounding track and I LOVE it. They keyboard line again is pure brilliance.

Ptolemy - Another dancey track allowing you to shake off the creepiness of the previous track, this one has a great synth line and sounds like one of the later produced tracks of the album, almost tribal sounding too! As usual, the beat and percussion are amazingly well done.

Hedphelym - More dark ambience already! This one has a very industrial sounding synth line and beat, the heart throb beat is very gloomy sounding, and definitely adds to the dark effect. On a side note Aphex is one of the only producers I have found that can use the beat to make a track sound way darker too, wonderfully used in this one. Don't listen to it too much or it will really get to you! Ace!

Delphium - This is a nice one too, awesome sounding percussion, a great beat and a very nice relaxing synth line, one of the most chill songs I've heard, and definitely up there in this album, very lush! :)

Actium - Slow moving track that will put you in a nice trance, very good for the end of the album. There are really no songs on here that I dislike, but if I did have to pick, I'd say that Actium and Ptolemy are the weakest on the album, with everything else being nothing less than solid gold. This is more like silver, and I think other artists would still do well to make tracks that sound like this, they all have that Aphex touch that you can't quite put your finger on. "

[TECCD004] 2562 - Aerial

Another great release from our own small country! Very techhy dubstep completely unlike the london sound that we know dubstep by today. Read on for the description! By the time of writing this his second full length album has been released too, which will be posted very soon! Keep an eye open if you like this one!

"Twenty-five sixty-two is not just a postcode in The Netherlands' Den Hague - it is also an alias of its resident who is a prolific producer of dubstep, techno, and broken beat atmospherics. Dave Huismans's first full length release on Tectonic under 2562 moniker is titled Aerial. Tectonic is the same label that previously brought you the 12-inchers from Pinch, Skream, and Cyrus. On Aerial, Huismans layers dubbed out minor chords on top of the blowing wind of white noise and deep sub-bass enriched syncopated beats. The rhythm bounces between a Detroit-meets-Berlin techno sound and reverb heavy dubstep, creating tunes geared more towards home listening then as the fillers on the dance floor [not that hearing these tracks booming on a loud sound system would be unappealing].With his own personal style, Aerial is more of an album then a compilation of singles. The tracks work well together, wrapped around the concept the same way Burial delivered the unmistakable sound of Untrue. One thing for sure - this isn't the sound of London. That is to say, that it seems to have more in common with minimal dub techno then the filthy bass ridden dubstep hooks. Both styles are excellent - just depends what you're in the mood for at the moment. And this very instant, I need to be chilled out and at the same time warmed up, keeping the evil grin away. At the end everything is just a matter of taste. And there's only one way for you to find out. For more music from Huismans, check out his two side projects: a few EPs on Subsolo Records as A Made Up Sound; and earlier released jazzy broken beat EPs on the Dutch Flyin' High Records under Dogdaze alias. Recommended if you want to hear dubstep with some Modern Love and Basic Channel feel."

[ECM1064/65ST] Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert

"The Köln Concert is a recording released through ECM by the renowned jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, who performed solo improvisations at the Cologne Opera House in Köln/Cologne in 1975. The album is one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, and the most sold solo album in jazz. The recording is in three parts, lasting 26 minutes, 34 minutes and 7 minutes, respectively. As the concert was originally published on LP, the second part was split into parts labeled "IIa" and "IIb". Part IIc actually is a 3rd part, the encore. The Köln Concert has been hailed as a masterpiece by critics, "flowing with human warmth." Quite a notable part of the sublimity of this concert is Jarrett's ability to produce seemingly limitless improvised material over a vamp of one or two chords for prolonged periods of time. For instance, in Part I, he spends almost 12 minutes vamping over the chords Am7 (A minor 7) to G major, sometimes in a slow, rubato feel, and other times in a bluesy, gospel rock feel. And for about the last 6 minutes of Part I, he vamps over an A major theme. Roughly the first 8 minutes of Part II A is a vamp over a D major groove with a repeated bass vamp in the left hand, and in Part II B, Jarrett improvises over an F# minor vamp for approximately the first 6 minutes. Since the release of The Köln Concert, Jarrett has been asked by pianists, students, musicologists and others, to publish the music. At first, he resisted such requests since, as he said, the music played was improvised "on a certain night and should go as quickly as it comes." However, this improvisation already existed in recording, and the transcription only represents the music, so he finally came around to publish an authorized edition, but recommended that every pianist who intended to play the concert should use the recording itself as having the final word. A transcription has also been published by Manuel Barrueco for classical guitar."

[INTACLP001] Polder - Poldermodel

As the name of the release may suggest, this is minimal techno straight from the polders of Holland. Polder, consisting of producers David Labeij and Laurens Lanting (the latter a.k.a. Lauhaus), proved to the (Dutch) techno community once again that Holland isn't as small as you expect it to be when you look at the map of Europe. Have fun with this one!

Wait, what are polders again?

"A polder is a low-lying tract of land enclosed by embankments known as dikes, that forms an artificial hydrological entity, meaning it has no connection with outside water other than through manually-operated devices. There are three types of polder:
- Land reclaimed from a body of water, such as a lake or the sea bed.
- Flood plains separated from the sea or river by a dike.
- Marshes separated from the surrounding water by a dike and consequently drained."

[WARPCD9] B12 - Electro-Soma

A classic on the Warp label! A masterpiece where a lot of acid house/techno influences are woven together with outerspace melodies and ambiances. At some points it even bears a close resemblance to Aphex Twins Selected Ambient Works 85-92, so fans of that album must check this one out too! Do note that the B12 album carries a way more oldskool environment than the Richard D. James release. Have fun!

[FATCD004] Marek Hemmann - In Between

This might simply be the best techno release from 2009. All the tracks know a balanced "mélange" of melody and drive without losing credibility. Check for example the track Gemini for this is without doubt the best track on the album.

A description of the track Gemini by friend and local Kamal:

"This track by Marek Hemmann succesfully combines the driving force of minimal techno while bringing back the funk of eclectic house with an out-of-this-world saxophone melody. As far as I'm concerned, this is the biggest dancefloorbomb of 2009 as of yet. "
